Breed Bio: Boxers

Boxers were officially recognized by the AKC in 1904 as a member of the Working Group. Usually ranging from 55-71lbs and 21-25 inches high, boxers were bred down from the Old English Bulldog and the Bullenbeisser, a now extinct breed. They are also part of the Molosser group, a category of solidly built, large breeds that descended from a large shepherd of the same name.

Previously boxers were a breed whose ears were cropped and tails were docked, but recent pressure from veterinary associations and the general public has come to see these as optional cosmetic surgeries with docking and cropping prohibited in some countries. Their heads are their most distinctive feature, and it must be in perfect proportion with their bodies. They come in five different colors with two different marking patterns.

The breed tends to be very playful and makes a great choice for families with children, but are active strong dogs that require a lot of attention. They can be quite headstrong in both routine and specialized training, but typically respond well to positive reinforcement.
