Breed Bio: Beagle

Beagles are a well known member of the AKC hound group, and were officially recognized by the AKC in 1885. They were originally bred for hunting hare, but are now used as detection dogs in the agricultural department of customs worldwide.

Typically ranging anywhere from 20-25lbs and roughly 13-16 inches high, the beagle can trace its ancestors all the way back to 8th century England as a descendant of the Talbot strain and Southern Hound. The modern breed was developed by Reverend Phillip Honeywood, but Thomas Johnson was the man that produced the scent driven hunting dog we know and love today.

They made their way into the United States in the 1840s, but have since become the fifth most popular and easily recognizable breeds despite their 11 different colors. Beagles are a naturally curious and friendly lot, but can get into mischief when left to follow their noses. Beagles make great family and working dogs and do well with basic training.
