Breed Bio: Rottweiler

The Rottweiler was officially recognized by the AKC in 1931 as part of the working group. They have their origins in Germany, where Rottweilers were used to herd livestock and pull carts full of butchered meat. More recently they are used as guard dogs, police dogs, and even service dogs for the blind.

Rottweilers are one of the oldest herding breeds, with a history dating back to the Roman Empire. Though their numbers diminished severely around 1882, they did experience a revival pre World War I as the demand for guard and police dogs increased.

Typically the breed can range anywhere from 77 to 130lbs, and stands 24-27 inches tall at the withers. Tails are traditionally docked, though recent years have seen a decline in that trend. This breed is all about balance, endurance, proportionality, intelligence and strength. The various standards in place for the Rottweiler's physical appearance specify these characteristics.
