Breed Bio: Lhasa Apso

Originally bred as an interior sentinel to warn Buddhist monks of intruders, the Lhasa Apso has it's roots in Tibet. The Lhasa Apso was bred down from a small breed of mountain wolf that was domesticated almost 4,000 years ago. They are considered one of the world's earliest dog breeds.

Officially recognized by the AKC in 1935, the Lhasa can live up to 14 years. Their coat is long and dense, and they usually weigh 13-15lbs. The coat of a Lhasa Apso can come in a variety of colors, and owners that aren't showing the breed typically keep the hair short to make it more manageable.

Because they were bred to be watch dogs, their sense of hearing is keen and they are quick to bark. They are independent and intelligent and require knowledgeable, consistent training, but can be fantastic family dogs.
