Breed Bio: Spinone Italiano

The Spinone Italiano is a relatively uncommon breed here in the United States, but is believed to be one of the oldest gun dogs in existence, with roots dating back to 500 BC, though which breed the Spinone descended from is a point of contention.

Spinone Italianos generally live 8-12 years, depending upon a variety of health factors. While the breed can be prone to hip dysplasia, among other things, a responsible breeder tests and controls for these potential defects.

The breed is strong and solid, coming in orange, brown, grey, and white (with or without markings) but always should have a tough and slightly wiry coat. A soft undercoat is undesirable and could mean the dog is being groomed too often.

They range in size from 24 to 28 inches at the withers, and are a larger dog at roughly 80lbs full grown.
