5 Potty Training Tips

There are many different suggestions on what works best for potty training new puppies. At SIT we spend a lot of time with very different dogs and these are our top 5 most go to potty training techniques!

  1. Minimize indoor accidents. For those first few weeks, carry your puppy outside to help them make it through those long hallways and elevator rides without being tempted to go. The more often they make it outside without an accident, the better!

  2. Distraction. Talk to your puppy or use toys when preparing them to go outside or when waiting for an elevator. If they are paying attention to you they are less likely to have an accident.

  3. Repeat repeat repeat. Choose your potty training word or phrase and say it until you drive yourself nuts! We want our pets to hear this word and know what you mean, so try to keep it simple and stick to it! Also, repeat the word before they go and then continue to repeat it until they finish to reinfoce the action.

  4. Treats! Treating a puppy is a very easy way to postively enforce good behavior. We try to use only positive reinforcement at SIT to propel happy puppys into good behavior. Saying "good puppy" and giving a treat immediately after going number 1 or 2 is a great method to fast potty training.

  5. Know their bladder. This sounds weird, but this is key to potty training! The standard rule is your puppy can hold its bladder 1 hour for every month of age. So if your puppy is 3 months old make sure that he has a bathroom break every 3 hours to minimize accidents in your home or his crate.

Sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's difficult, but it's always worth it! Pets add so much happiness to our lives even though it can be stressful at times!

Good luck everyone!
